The Robert Hall Lewis collection includes his music (both manuscript and printed), the printed music of other composers, family and general correspondence, biographical and professional materials, teaching materials, material relating to promoting his music and conducting, programs and clippings, both family and professional-related photographs, and selected annotated books and periodicals from his personal library. The collection spans the years 1888-2004, with the bulk of the materials dating from the 1950s to the 1970s. The music by Robert Hall Lewis encompasses his entire creative output of eighty-seven compositions written for various mediums. The majority of his works include sketches and all but a few works include holograph manuscript scores.

Robert Hall Lewis, born in Portland, Or. on Apr. 22, 1926, was a composer, conductor, and educator. He began his undergraduate studies at the Eastman School of Music in 1945, finishing, with a doctorate, in 1964. From 1952-1953 he studied in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Eugene Bigout. He was a Fulbright scholar, studying in Vienna between 1955 and 1957 with Hans Swarofsky, Karl Schiske, Ernst Krenek, and Hans Erich Apostel.
